German federation calls on Berlin to increase focus on climate protection

Oct 24, 2013 - The German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) Tuesday called on the future government to focus on climate protection in its energy transition policy and aim at a 40% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2020.

BEE also appealed for a change to the energy market design and a continuation of the remuneration system to accelerate the energy transition. Investors need strong incentives and security in order to carry out a cost-efficient renewable power expansion, BEE added.

According to the federation, falling prices of solar systems and onshore wind facilities enable the expansion of the share of electricity generated by renewable energy sources to up to a 50% by 2020 without a further increase in costs for consumers.

In addition, the heating sector has large potential for reduction of CO2 emissions. Besides, the expansion of the heating sector will lead to a reduction of energy imports, which will consequently curb energy price rises. The energy transition in the heating sector should accelerate at a double rate during the next legislative period, BEE said.
