Sep 25, 2013 - German offshore wind company Areva Wind, part of French nuclear energy group Areva (EPA:AREVA), said on Tuesday it has started the installation of 120 of its 5 MW turbines in Global Tech I wind farm and Trianel Windpark Borkum in the in North Sea.
Areva Wind will supply and install 80 wind turbines for Global Tech I wind farm and 40 turbines for Trianel Windpark Borkum. The offshore wind parks in the North Sea are expected to be completed by 2014.
The total capacity of the wind farms will be 600 MW, which is enough to supply 600,000 households with electricity. After the completion of the two farms, Areva Wind's installations in Germany will account for a third of the country's offshore capacity, according to Areva Wind.
The 200 MW Borkum park is owned by German utility group Trianel in cooperation with other municipal utilities. It is located 45 km (28 miles) off the island of Borkum. The mounting of the turbines was originally planned for end 2012, but was delayed due to problems with the grid connection.
Global Tech I, with a capacity of 400 MW, is also owned by several utility companies, including Stadtwerke Muenchen with a 25% stake. The farm is located 180 km north of the German shore.
