(SeeNews) – Sep 11, 2012 – The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has granted approval for the construction of a 800 MW converter platform and a submarine cable system to hook three North Sea wind farms to the grid.
The converter platform DolWin alpha and the submarine cable system DolWin1 will serve as connection of the offshore farms Borkum West II, MEG Offshore 1 and Borkum Riffgrund 1.
The agency's approval covers the construction and operation of the converter platform and the placement and operation of six sea cable systems to carry the electricity from the wind farms to the converter. DolWin1, on its part, will transfer the current to the outer borders of the sea.
The converter platform will be situated around 47 km (29.2 mi) north of the island of Borkum and 100 km (62 mi) west of the island of Heligoland. The agency set the latest construction start date for December 31, 2014.
The permit allows an initial term of 25 years for the new systems.
