General Electric (NYSE:GE) said today it will provide variable speed technology for what will be the world's largest pumped-storage hydro plant with a capacity of 3.6 GW.
The Fengning hydro project is located in China's Hebei Province and is due to be supplying power for the Winter Olympics in the country in 2022.
GE Power is taking part in the second 1.8-GW phase of the project thanks to an order from Andritz and Dongfang Electric Machinery Co Ltd. It will provide two variable speed MV7000 converters for two 300-MW generators supplied by Andritz and one static frequency converter for the rest of the four generators provided by Dongfang Electric Machinery.
GE said this is its first order in China for variable speed technology.
