General Electric (NYSE:GE) has signed a pact with China National Machinery Industry Corp, or Sinomach, to collaborate on clean energy projects in sub-Saharan Africa, including on the 102-MW Kipeto wind project in Kenya.
The US conglomerate and the Beijing-based, state-owned enterprise have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop, invest in and finance clean energy projects under the Power Africa initiative, launched by the Obama administration in 2013.
One of those developments will be the Kipeto wind project, for which GE has already entered into a partnership with Kenyan firm Kipeto Energy Ltd. As previously announced, the project will be funded by the Overseas Private Investment Corp (OPIC), the US government’s development finance institution.
The Kipeto wind farm will be constructed in Kajiado County and will consist of 47 pieces of the GE 1.6-100 turbines and 16 units of the GE 1.6-82.5 machines. It will be among the first utility-scale wind farms in Kenya, which has set a goal to reach 2,036 MW of installed wind power capacity by 2030.
