Oct 11, 2012 - Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa (MCE:GAM) on Thursday unveiled a 18-MW wind turbine order from Finnish wind energy company TuuliWatti Ltd and a framework agreement for a further 117 MW of machines.
Gamesa will deliver, install and commission four turbines of 4.5 MW each at the Simo wind farm in northern Finland. Under the contract, the Spanish group will also operate and maintain the turbines for 10 years, with an extension option for another five years. The machines, designed to resist low temperatures, are due to be delivered in the second quarter of 2013 and to become operational in the final quarter of the same year.
Gamesa has also inked a framework agreement with TuuliWatti, a joint venture between Finnish energy company St1 Ltd and retail cooperative S-Group, for the supply of a further 117 MW of turbines, 26 units also of 4.5 MW, in the coming months for another four wind farms in Finland.
The deal marks an entry for Gamesa in Finland, continuing the company's expansion in northern Europe following its move into Sweden more than a year ago. Gamesa said that Finland was seen as one of the most high-potential growth markets in Europe in the coming years. The country targets 2,500 MW of wind energy capacity in 2020, while it currently has 200 MW.
