(ADPnews) - Nov 29, 2010 - Spanish wind energy company Gamesa (MCE:GAM) plans to close one of its plants in Galicia, namely the factory in As Somozas, the province of La Coruna, official sources with the firm and trade unions confirmed on Friday.
After Gamesa was left out of the wind energy tender in Galicia, it decided to cancel its industrial plan for that region, which included investments of EUR 51 million (USD 67.5m). Moreover, the company came up with the decision to cut its production capacity with the closure of the As Somozas plant, which will result in the dismissal of 82 part-time workers.
In a short-term period, Gamesa intends to close one of its windmill production halls at the plant in As Somozas, thus slashing by half the production capacity to 450 MW from the current 900 MW annually. In addition, Gamesa will do away with two production lines out of the existing five.
Gamesa explained that the closure will be carried out in the short term, while the trade union UGT noted that the measure will not affect the permanent employees.
