Gamesa, Northrop Grumman team up for offshore wind project in USA
(ADPnews) - Oct 6, 2010 - Spanish wind energy company Gamesa (MCE:GAM) and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding will work together to launch Gamesa's new G11X-5.0 MW offshore wind turbine in the USA, the Spanish company said today.
Gamesa has signed the agreement with the unit of US defence group Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) to develop the offshore wind technology by the fourth quarter of 2012.
Gamesa is currently designing and developing the turbine, while Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding will focus on heavy load logistics, system performance and reliability, as well as on the applications of such technologies in the marine environment. The team will work also on a site selection, final construction, installation and testing of the prototype.
The agreement is in line with the US Government plans for intensifying their focus on developing offshore wind energy projects, which total over 5,000 MW under different stage of development.
Moreover, Gamesa is currently working on another family of offshore turbines with a capacity of 6-7 MW to be available in 2014.
