Oct 10, 2014 - UK-based firm Forth Energy intends to build a 20-MW biomass-fired power plant in Scotland, the BBC said Thursday.
The company, a joint venture of utility SSE (LON:SSE) and port operator Forth Ports, has submitted a proposal of application notice to the Perth and Kinross Council, while a full planning application for the project is expected to be lodged in due course, according to the report. The Perth and Kinross Council’s development management committee will discuss the scheme on October 15.
Forth Energy intends to construct the biomass plant on agricultural land at the Inveralmond industrial estate in Perth. The facility will use up to 200,000 tonnes of timber as feedstock each year. Once completed, it will export its output to the national grid and will also generate heat for local businesses.
Earlier this year, the UK firm abandoned GBP 1.1 billion (USD 1.8m/EUR 1.4bn) worth of biomass projects in Scotland with a total capacity of up to 300 MW electricity and 260 MW heat. They included a plant at the Port of Grangemouth, a facility proposed for the Port of Rosyth and a combined heat and power biomass plant at the Port of Dundee.
