Florida PSC okays Progress Energy, EcoGen PPA for 60 MW biomass power plant
Sep 22, 2011 - Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) on Tuesday said it had cleared a power purchase agreement (PPA) between US EcoGen and utility Progress Energy Inc (NYSE:PGN) for the output of a 60 MW biomass power plant in the state.
Under the PPA, EcoGen Polk LLC will sell energy from its proposed plant to Progress Energy Florida for some 29 years, starting on January 1, 2014.
The plant to be located in Polk county is seen to produce electricity enough to power 10,000 households, PSC said.
EcoGen estimates the plant's construction to create 300 jobs and its operation to require 35 jobs. The company plans initially to process waste wood at the plant and considers growing a crop as a feedstock in the future, according to the utility regulator.
