September 3 (Renewables Now) - Social media giant Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) that allows it to buy the electricity generated by a 200-MW portion of the 525-MW Aviator Wind project in Texas.

The particular project is being developed in Coke County by Apex Clean Energy and owned by funds managed by Ares Management Corporation (NYSE:ARES). The news was announced by them on Tuesday and they also mentioned that an additional corporate PPA for the majority of the remaining capacity will be unveiled at a later date.

Facebook will purchase the power produced by the Aviator Wind East portion in order to support its operations in the region. The tech company is looking to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 75% and power all of its operations with renewables in 2020.

According to the announcement, Aviator Wind East will become operational in 2020. The developers say that the entire wind farm will represent the largest single-phase wind project in ERCOT and also the largest single-phase, single-site wind project in the country.
