Cennergi (Pty) Ltd, a 50/50 joint venture between Exxaro Resources (JSE:EXX) and India’s Tata Power (BOM:500400), on Thursday commissioned the 134-MW Amakhala Emoyeni wind farm in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.
The Amakhala Emoyeni plant is Cennergi’s first operational asset. The company expects to complete its second wind farm shortly. Both facilities were awarded contracts under the second window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
The operational wind park consists of 56 pieces of Nordex’s 2.4-MW N117 turbines installed on four farms near the town of Bedford. It will sell the generated electricity under a 20-year contract with local utility Eskom.
Cennergi holds a 95% interest in the plant, while the Bedford Community Wind Farm Trust and Cookhouse Community Wind Farm Trust each hold 2.5% stakes. The project was initially developed by Windlab.
