EU utilities call for binding renewable energy targets for 2030

Sep 18, 2013 - The German association for local public utilities VKU together with a number of European renewable energy companies demand binding renewable energy targets for 2030 in a letter to the EU energy ministers in the eve of their meeting on the issue, VKU said on Tuesday.

The energy ministers of the EU states will discuss the energy and climate policy until 2030 on September 19 and 20 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The current framework for renewable energy expires in 2020.

According to VKU's head, Hans-Joachim Reck, the expansion of renewable energy requires long-term stable and clear investment conditions, thus the industry needs binding European targets for after 2020. VKU welcomes EU's commitment to expansion of the distribution networks and calls for a framework concerning the security of energy supply.

VKU represents the interests of 1,400 German utilities operating in the fields of energy supply, water supply and sewerage and waste management. Renewable energy companies which signed the letter include Vestas, Dong Energy, EnBW and 3M.
