The partners behind the Hywind Scotland floating wind farm have installed a new battery system designed to store electricity generated by the 30-MW power plant off the coast of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire.
Equinor ASA (NYSE:EQNR), formerly Statoil, and the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, better known as Masdar, have deployed the so-called Batwind battery system with a capacity of 1.2 MW at an onshore substation tied to the floating wind farm.
The two partners announced the inauguration today, saying that this project is the first step towards a scalable, global renewable energy storage system. They expect to begin testing the system soon, assessing the operational data based on the weather, market prices and consumption patterns.
“Batwind will help us to understand how we can deploy this new technology in future projects, both in solar power and wind power plants,” said Bader Al Lamki, Masdar’s Executive Director for Clean Energy.
Equinor and Masdar inaugurated the five-turbine Hywind Scotland plant in October 2017. The Norwegian company is the controlling shareholder with a 75% stake, while Masdar holds 25%.
