US networking company Equinix Inc (NASDAQ:EQIX) said on Monday it has agreed to buy a total of 225 MW of wind energy in Oklahoma and Texas from two separate suppliers to power all of its data centres in North America.
More specifically, the company has entered into long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with each of NextEra Energy Resources LLC and Invenergy LLC. The value of the deals was not given.
With the NextEra unit, Equinix has agreed to buy roughly 556,000 MWh of electricity per year from 125 MW of capacity at the Rush Springs Renewable Generation Facility in Grady and Stephens Counties, Oklahoma.
At the same time, the data centre operator has inked a 100-MW PPA with Invenergy that will provide it with about 457,000 MWh of electricity per year generated at the Wake Wind Energy Facility in Floyd and Crosby Counties, Texas.
Both wind farms will be completed by the end of next year.
Thanks to the two new deals, Equinix will achieve its goal to power 100% of its facilities in North America by the end of 2016 and will nearly double its global renewable energy share to 82% from 43%. In September, the company said it had signed a similar off-take contract with SunEdison for 105 MW of solar power in California.
