German utility E.on SE (ETR:EOAN) and Japan’s Kyuden Mirai Energy Co Inc have tied up to jointly develop offshore wind projects in Japan, it was announced today.
The parties have signed a cooperation agreement, calling for the deployment of fixed-bottom offshore wind capacity, and have agreed to start with a study to select a project for development, construction and operation in the area off Kyushu island. At a later point, the partnership could be expanded into other regions, as well, E.on said in a press release.
The move is in line with E.on’s decision to set foot on the Japanese wind market after it opened a local office in Tokyo. The company noted its technical know-how from its 1.8 GW of completed projects in Europe will be instrumental in its work in Japan. Commenting on the collaboration with Kyuden Mirai, Sven Utermohlen, chief operating officer at E.on Climate & Renewables said: “Our capabilities complement each other while we share the same values and the ambition to drive offshore wind growth in Japan.”
Kyuden Mirai is part of a consortium developing the Hibiki-nada wind project off Kyushu, which will have up to 55 turbines with a combined capacity of 220 MW.
