EnerVenue, a Fremont, California-based company specialising in metal-hydrogen batteries, on Tuesday said it will open a gigafactory in Shelby County, Kentucky, which is expected to start production by the end of the year.
The one-million-square-foot (92,903 sq metre) manufacturing facility will produce the company’s Energy Storage Vessels, its large-format battery technology.
The first phase will have an annual production capacity of 1 GWh, with EnerVenue looking to scale up to more than 20 GWh per year across manufacturing sites in the US with an investment of over USD 1 billion.
The company was offered USD 10.3 million (EUR 9.5m) in tax incentives for the first phase of the project by the state of Kentucky. It will also receive property and wage tax rebates totaling USD 20 million over a 25-year period from Shelby County.
The gigafactory’s initial opening and first phase of the production ramp is expected to create 450 full-time jobs.
EnerVenue says it has secured more than 7 GWh of commitments from customers, including Pine Gate Renewables, Nicon Industries’ Green Energy Renewable Solutions and Sonnell Power Solutions.
