Swiss energy supplier EKT Holding AG has agreed to acquire a 20% interest in a project for a wind park in the northeastern canton of Thurgau with a capacity of between 40 MW and 50 MW.
The Wellenberg project is developed by Zurich-based utility EKZ which last year decided to advance the planning process following positive preliminary studies.
Under the plan, eight wind turbines will be installed in the eastern part of the Thundorf municipality. Depending on the final installed capacity, the wind park is expected to generate between 70 GWh and 80 GWh of green electricity annually which would be enough to supply around 18,000 local households.
EKZ is looking for more investors to support the project and discussions with potential partners are currently underway.
Commenting on the project, EKT Group's chief executive Martin Simioni said that wind energy is central to renewables expansion in Switzerland and the reduction of the country's dependence on electricity imports in winter months. Unlike solar power, wind energy can make a significant contribution to electricity production in the winter months as well as in the mornings and evenings, Simioni added.
