Italian energy group Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) announced today it has won the right to ink a 25-year energy supply contract for a 285-MW wind farm in India’s latest 2-GW wind power auction.
Enel took part in the bidding process through its Indian renewable energy subsidiary -- BLP Energy Pvt Ltd. It noted that this is its first tender award in the country.
“Looking ahead, we are planning to expand further in India, which will also serve as a platform for growth throughout the overall Asia Pacific region, fully leveraging on the huge availability of renewable resources and growing energy demand of this area,” commented Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Enel’s Global Renewable Energies Division Enel Green Power.
The Italian energy group anticipates to invest over USD 290 million (EUR 237m) in the construction of the plant, which will be located in the state of Gujarat. It did not reveal the tariff it offered, but local media reports say it amounts to INR 2.51 (USD 0.039/EUR 0.032) per kWh -- the lowest in this particular auction.
Upon completion in the second half of 2019, the wind park will be generating over 1,000 GWh of electricity per year.
Enel’s BLP Energy currently owns and operates 172 MW of wind power generating capacity in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
