EnBW inks 50-MW PPA with Salzgitter for He Dreiht offshore wind project

German steel producer Salzgitter AG (ETR:SZG) will offtake 50 MW of green power from the 900-MW He Dreiht wind project in the North Sea, currently under development, to support its green transformation.

The clean electricity will be supplied as part of a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) that Salzgitter has signed with the owner of the offshore wind project, German electric utility EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG (ETR:EBK).

The supply deal supports Salzgitter's SALCOS project under which the company is seeking to decarbonise its steel production operations.

He Dreiht will be built in German waters some 90 km (55.92 mi) northwest of the island of Borkum with commissioning planned for the end of 2025.

EnBW has already completed to a large extent the supplier selection process for the main components of the project and expects to make the final investment decision next year.

The deal with Salzgitter is the third PPA EnBW has secured for He Dreiht. The first agreement was signed in December 2021 with Fraport AG (ETR:FRA), the operator of the Frankfurt airport, for 85 MW of the wind park's capacity.

The second PPA was inked earlier in November with Evonik Industries AG (ETR:EVK). The specialty chemicals company will offtake 100 MW of clean power from the project for a period of 15 years.
