April 2 (Renewables Now) - The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) will independently measure the performance of a tidal turbine system that will be deployed by Verdant Power Inc in New York City’s East River.

EMEC said today that it will provide an independent performance assessment of a system comprising three 5th Generation (Gen5) tidal turbines mounted on a Verdant Power TriFrame. This system will be deployed for commercial demonstration next year.

“This will be the first time EMEC has carried out an off-site performance assessment, and potentially the first marine energy test report issued through the IECRE,” said Elaine Buck, technical manager at EMEC.

Verdant Power is a New York-based marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) energy specialist that in late 2018 secured USD 6 million (EUR 5.4m) in funding for the so-called Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) project. The deployment of the three Gen5 tidal turbines will be carried out as part of that same project.
