November 24 (Renewables Now) - Portuguese utility EDP SA (ELI:EDP) announced on Monday that its renewables unit has started building the roughly 10-MW Quintanilla II wind farm located in the north of Spain.

EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) is installing three GE137 wind turbines by GE Renewable Energy in Burgos. With an individual capacity of 3.33 MW, the wind turbines have a total height of 199.9 metres, making them the largest in the whole Iberian Peninsula.

Once operational, the new wind farm will be able to generate enough clean power to meet the annual electricity demand of 10,000 local homes.

Last week, EDPR closed a 63-MW virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company Novartis AG (SWX:NOVN) concerning a 36-MW wind farm and a 26.8-MW solar farm in Spain.
