EDP, El Corte Ingles form blockchain-based renewables partnership

EDP Renovaveis wind farm

December 4 (Renewables Now) - Portuguese power utility EDP - Energias de Portugal SA (ELI:EDP) will use blockchain technology to guarantee the renewable origin of the wind power it sells to Spanish department store group El Corte Ingles.

The Madrid-based customer will purchase electricity generated by five EDPR wind farms located in the provinces of Malaga, Seville and Cadiz, with a combined capacity of 169.4 MW, so it could supply its retail establishments in Malaga, Seville and Campo de las Naciones. El Corte Ingles will be able to instantly track the green source of the energy, EDP said in a statement.

The Blockchain Energy Tracking system will certify that the information contained in the chain is accurate. It will be used in parallel with the traditional Guarantees of Origin issued by the National Securities Market Commission (CNMC) over a period of up to one year.

EDP has been the energy supplier of El Corte Ingles for over a decade now.
