EDF Renewable launches 161-MW Texas wind farm

Dec 21, 2012 - US company EDF Renewable Energy, former enXco and part of French EDF Energies Nouvelles, said Thursday its 161-MW Spinning Spur Wind Project in Texas had kicked off.

The project, which features 70 units of 2.3-MW turbines built by Germany’s Siemens AG (ETR:SIE), is located in Oldham County, Texas some 30 miles (50 km) west of Amarillo. It will operate under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Southwestern Public Service Company, a unit of Xcel Energy (NYSE:XEL).

According to estimates, it will be able to cover the electricity needs of some 50,000 average households.

The news of the launch of commercial operation of Spinning Spur comes a few weeks after EDF Renewable Energy officially put online a 100.8-MW wind farm in Kansas.

EDF Energies Nouvelles is the renewable energy arm of French utility EDF (EPA:EDF).
