EDF cuts ribbon on Blyth offshore wind farm, 49-MW battery system in UK

EDF Energy, a unit of French utility EDF (EPA:EDF), has officially launched its 41.5-MW Blyth offshore wind farm and a 49-MW battery storage facility, both in England.

Located off the Northumberland coast, the Blyth offshore demonstrator uses five MHI Vestas V164 turbines with a power rating of 8.3 MW. It is the first one in the offshore wind industry using self-floating and submersible gravity-base foundations, EDF, the operator of the 62-MW Teesside offshore wind farm near Redcar, said on Friday.

In addition, EDF has also cut the ribbon at its West Burton B battery storage facility in Nottinghamshire, built under a project to provide enhanced frequency response services to the National Grid (LON:NG). The system is situated within EDF’s West Burton Combined Cycle Gas power station and will help balance the UK grid by responding quickly to fluctuations as the energy mix moves to more renewables.

Both projects were implemented in line with EDF Group’s goal to double its renewables generation capacity by 2030 and add 10 GW of new battery storage systems by 2035, said Jean-Bernard Levy, chairman and CEO of EDF Group.
