EDC restarts operations at 55-MW geothermal plant unit
Aug 26, 2014 - Philippine firm Energy Development Corp (PSE:EDC) said on Tuesday that the 55-MW generation unit 1 of its 130-MW Bacon-Manito (Bacman) geothermal complex has resumed operations.
The cooling towers of units 1 and 2 of the plant were damaged by Typhoon Glenda that hit the Philippines in mid-July, as a result of which the facilities went on an unplanned outage.
EDC said today that the second unit is still going through cooling tower restoration works. The process is conducted concurrently with the installation of a new steam turbine rotor unit and diaphragms supplied by Japan’s Toshiba Corp (TYO:6502). EDC noted that it expects unit 2 to become operational again in October.
In the meantime, unit 3, with a rated capacity of 20 MW, is currently on a 30-day reliability run after the installation of a new Toshiba generator. It has attained a stable load of around 18 MW, EDC mentioned.
