UK green energy provider Ecotricity Group Ltd on Thursday switched on a 6.9-MW three-turbine wind park at Alveston, South Gloucestershire, which it said could be the last built in England.
"Current government policy, to prevent new wind parks in England makes no sense and is a political choice – because onshore energy isn’t just good for the environment, it makes good economic sense too," commented the company's founder Dale Vince.
Ecotricity also said it has recently been granted planning permission for a 10-MW battery storage project on the Alveston site that will share the grid connection with the three turbines. According to the company, the storage project will allow it balance variations between supply and demand each half hour.
The new wind farm, which has been in development for more than a decade, will provide enough electricity to meet the needs of more than 3,000 homes over 30 years, the company calculates.
