The European Commission (EC) has given its blessing to the revised technical layout for the planned 400-MW offshore interconnection between Germany and Denmark, Energinet.dk said Friday.
The Kriegers Flak – Combined Grid Solution in the Baltic Sea will receive a grant of as much as EUR 150 million (USD 167m) from the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR). Operation is to commence by end-2018.
The offshore interconnection will use the national grid connections to the Baltic 1 & 2 offshore wind farms in German waters and Denmark’s planned 600-MW Kriegers Flak wind park. These wind parks are actually located less than 30 km away from each other.
The project has been initiated by transmission system operators (TSOs) Energinet.dk from Denmark and 50Hertz from Germany. For the two countries, the Kriegers Flak – Combined Grid Solution will facilitate the transport of green energy over long distances and cross-border, while for the EU as a whole it is an important piece of the plans for a common energy market in Europe.
“With the Combined Grid Solution we create the nucleus for an offshore grid in the Baltic Sea, a milestone in the development of European grids,” said 50Hertz CEO Boris Schucht.
The interconnection will be located between the Danish region of Zealand and German Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
