Sep 4, 2014 - US utility Duke Energy Corp (NYSE:DUK) on Wednesday unveiled plans for the construction of a 110-MW wind park in the state of Texas.
The proposed facility will be built, owned and operated by Duke Energy Renewables, a subsidiary of the US utility.
As part of the project, Duke Energy will install 55 units of Danish Vestas Wind Systems’ (CPH:VWS) 2-MW turbines at a site in Starr County. The Los Vientos V facility is expected to be switched on at the end of next year, generating enough power to supply 33,000 households. Garland Power & Light, Greenville Electric Utility System and Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) have agreed to buy the plant’s output under 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).
When the Los Vientos V wind farm is fully operational, Duke Energy will have over 2,100 MW of wind farm capacity. The company is currently building the Los Vientos III and IV parks with a combined capacity of 400 MW. The facilities are to come on stream in early 2015 and mid-2016, respectively, Duke Energy said previously.
Other wind power plants in the utility’s Texas portfolio include the 200-MW Los Vientos I, the 202-MW Los Vientos II and the 283-MW Sweetwater facilities.
