The shareholders of Dong Energy A/S (CPH:DENERG) today approved changing the company's name to Ørsted A/S.
The Danish offshore wind-focused energy company announced the decision to rebrand itself at the start of the month, saying its old name, originally short for Danish Oil and Natural Gas, no longer fit its identity. The company recently completed the disposal of its upstream oil and gas business, completing its transformation into a "pure play renewables company."
“Ørsted is a signal of our Danish roots – and our vision of creating a world that runs entirely on green energy," board chairman Thomas Thune Andersen said in a statement after today's extraordinary general meeting. According to him, the new name has been well received at home and abroad.
The company has been renamed after Hans Christian Ørsted, a Danish scientist who spearheaded the discovery of electromagnetism in 1820. Its ticker symbol will change to Orsted at the start of trading on October 31.
