Danish utility Dong Energy A/S has selected MHI Vestas Offshore Wind’s 8-MW offshore wind turbine for the 450-MW Borkum Riffgrund II project in the German North Sea, the parties announced today.
The 50/50 joint venture between Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) was appointed preferred supplier of turbines for the project. The Danish company stressed that a firm and unconditional order for the V164-8.0MW turbine has not yet been signed.
Separately, Dong said it chose MHI Vestas’ machine after holding a competitive tender. “The performance of the 8MW turbine from MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is decisive for us selecting it as the preferred turbine for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 development project,” said Samuel Leupold, executive vice president for Dong Energy Wind Power.
Borkum Riffgrund 2 will be located next to the 312-MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm, which already has all of its 78 turbines installed and will enter full commercial operation later in 2015. “If we should decide to build Borkum Riffgrund 2, it would be our fourth wind farm project in Germany underlining our big commitment to that market,” Leupold added.
