Dong awards SPT Offshore suction-bucket base job in UK waters

May 23, 2014 - Danish state-owned utility Dong Energy has hired Dutch contractor SPT Offshore to design the suction bucket foundations for the substations that will serve 1,580 MW of wind farms off the UK coast.

Under the deal, the value of which was not disclosed, SPT Offshore will be in charge of the structural and geotechnical design of suction bucket foundations for five transformer substations, the Netherlands-based firm said. The contract involves the 250-MW Burbo Bank offshore wind farm extension in Liverpool Bay, the 580-MW Race Bank off the Lincolnshire and northern Norfolk coasts, and the 750-MW extension of Dong’s 367-MW Walney offshore wind farm off the Cumbria coast.

SPT Offshore expects to begin installation of the first substation jacket in 2016.

Last week, Dong Energy awarded a contract to Danish cabling firm CT Offshore to lay and bury 97 inter-array cables for its Gode Wind 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in Germany which will have a combined capacity of 582 MW.
