Denmark's AET wins EPC contract for 42-MWt CHP plant in UK

Danish company Aalborg Energie Technik a/s (AET) on Wednesday said it has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for a biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in the UK with a capacity of 42 MWt and 12 MWe.

The customer is JG Pears Power Ltd, a subsidiary of JG Pears, a producer of protein meals and fats of animal origin.

The plant will be built near Newark, Nottinghamshire and will provide steam and electricity to JG Pears' animal rendering facility. Excess power will be exported to the National Grid. The CHP plant will replace over 90% of the fossil fuels currently used in the rendering process with meat and bone meal (MBM), according to JG Pears' website.

AET said it will deliver all elements of the cogeneration plant, including the fuel storage, fuel handling and feeding system, AET combustion system and AET biomass boiler, steam turbine and others. It expects to hand over the project in early 2018.

The CHP facility was initially rejected by the local authority but the Department for Communities and Local Government granted consent in 2014 following a successful appeal.
