Deepwater Wind proposes 1 GW offshore wind farm in USA
(ADPnews) - Dec 9, 2010 - US offshore wind power developer Deepwater Wind LLC yesterday said it has submitted to the federal authorities a proposal to build a 1 GW offshore wind farm in the Rhode Island Sound.
The Deepwater Wind Energy Center project will include 200 turbines and will replace the 350-MW, 100-turbine wind farm proposal placed by the company two years ago.
The new plan also includes the establishment of an undersea transmission network from Massachusetts to New York, connecting several states that will buy the farm's power, according to the company.
Deepwater expects the proposed wind farm to cost USD 4.5 billion-5 billion (EUR 3.4bn-3.8bn), besides an additional USD 500 million-1 billion estimated for the transmission system.
The company said it filed an application in October with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement to lease an area of 270 square miles (700 square kilometres) between Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
