Oct 22, 2012 - Danish utility Dong Energy has shelved plans to construct the up to 346 MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 wind farm offshore the North Sea coast of Germany after falling out with power grid operator Tennet.
"Due to the lack of the contract for the grid connection for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 project being awarded, we have been forced to suspend the development and construction," Christoph Mertens, director of Dong Energy Wind Power in Germany, told Reuters.
Tennet had not provided a date for linking the offshore wind farm to Germany's onshore grid, a spokeswoman for Dong said Sunday, thus confirming a report in German weekly magazine Der Spiegel. She added that the company would instead proceed with a project in the UK.
The spokeswoman refused to be drawn on the information, also published by Der Spiegel, that Dong had cancelled an order with Siemens for 97 wind turbines.
Dong had planned to invest EUR 1.3 billion (USD 1.7bn) in the Riffgrund 2 wind farm.
