Covanta wraps up energy-from-waste expansion project in Hawaii

Oct 9, 2012 - US energy-from-waste company Covanta Energy Corp (NYSE:CVA) today said it had finished work on the expansion of an energy-from-waste facility in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The project will allow the H-Power facility to generate about 90 MW of energy, gross, which is equivalent to almost 8% of the island of Oahu's power demand. It saw the company add a third boiler to the facility, boosting its daily capacity by 900 tonnes of municipal solid waste to 3,000 tonnes. Covanta said the plant was now able to process all of the island's post-recycled municipal solid waste.

The facility is owned by the City and County of Honolulu, while Covanta is its designer, builder and operator. The company has been operating the plant since 1990 and the completion of the expansion marks the start of a new 20-year operating contract with the City and County.
