Cost of 70-MW geothermal project in Ethiopia put at USD 270m - report

Dec 28, 2011 - Ethiopia's 70-MW Aluto Lango geothermal project calls for an investment of some USD 270 million (EUR 207m), Ethiopian newspaper Capital reported this week.

Financing for the project, which currently generates 7.3 MW and is scheduled for completion by 2015, is being provided by development agencies from Japan, France and Germany, as well as the World Bank.

This is the only geothermal development under Ethiopia's growth and transformation plan, through which the country seeks to increase its power generation capacity to 10,000 MW by end 2015 from 2,000 MW in 2010, the newspaper said.

Ethiopia has a geothermal potential of about 5,000 MW coming from the Great Rift Valley, which spreads from northern Syria to Mozambique.
