China's Sany wants to make wind turbines in India

Chinese company Sany Group Co Ltd reiterated plans to build 2 GW of wind power capacity in India and also said it wants to make turbines locally.

“India will become Sany's second global wind power manufacturing center after China,” the company said in a statement on Thursday, without revealing details on that plan. It says it has a doubly-fed, permanent magnet, and independent core technology for wind.

In May, Reuters reported that Sany was also studying the feasibility of setting up a wind turbine factory in Brazil.

China, India and Brazil were all in the list of the top five wind power markets in the first half of 2016, with six-month capacity additions of 10 GW, 2.4 GW and 1.1 GW, respectively, shows a report by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA).

Sany announced its plans to invest USD 3 billion (EUR 2.7bn) in some 2 GW of Indian wind projects a year ago. At the time it signed a Green Energy Commitment and delivered it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
