China plans to double ethanol production by 2020

China will aim at doubling the domestic ethanol production to 4 million tonnes in 2020, the new five-year plan of the National Energy Administration (NEA) shows.

The Asian country currently produces 2.1 million tonnes of ethanol a year, although its previous five-year plan that ended in 2015, also targeted yearly production capacity of 4 million tonnes.

The new five-year plan will promote ethanol application as fuel as well as "vigorous development of fibre ethanol" through recycling of the non-edible parts of agricultural crops, the plan published at the start of December says.

China will also strive to achieve 15 MW of installed biomass-to-power capacity in 2020, adding 5 MW more to the 10 MW already installed.
