Australian wave energy developer Carnegie Wave Energy Ltd (ASX:CWE) has won a GBP-2-million (USD 3.1m/EUR 2.8m) grant from Wave Energy Scotland (WES) for the development of a universal power take-off system (PTO).
As part of the so-called WavePOD project, Carnegie will seek to deliver a fully-tested hydraulic PTO prototype along with the design and specification for a full-scale system that will subsequently be integrated into a CETO wave power device, it said today.
Carnegie’s wholly-owned unit CWE UK will cooperate with local sector player Aquamarine Power and drive and control manufacturer Bosch Rexroth to develop the system over an 18-month period.
The Aussie firm explained that the PTO system within its CETO 6 buoy will be used to convert the hydraulic and mechanical energy from the CETO hydraulic cylinder into electricity. The goal is to use the full-scale WavePOD unit in Carnegie’s first UK project, which is expected to become operational in 2018.
WES is a government-backed unit of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
