Canary Islands govt greenlights 7 MW of Fuerteventura wind

The Canary Islands government approved on Friday the construction of two wind projects totalling 7 MW on the island of Fuerteventura.

The wind parks, the 4.7-MW Fuerteventura Renovable I and the 2.3-MW Fuerteventura Renovable III, are located in the municipal district of La Oliva. The government also ordered that the zoning ordinance of La Oliva be modified or revised within six months.

Both projects can apply for subsidies that the government approved in January for the installation of new wind capacity on the islands. The entire budget to support the installation of at least 180 MW of wind power amounts to EUR 80 million (USD 90.7m), the government said.

The new wind power capacity eligible for the subsidy is capped for each island. In Fuerteventura, the limit is 45 MW.

Currently, the island has 27.7 MW of wind farms.
