The Canadian government will grant CAD 28.5 million (USD 21.8m/EUR 18.4m) to Sustainable Marine for the installation of what will be Canada’s first floating tidal energy system.
The financing was announced on Thursday by Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. To be sourced from Natural Resources Canada’s Emerging Renewables Power Programme, it will support the construction of an up to 9-MW installation that will supply power to the province of Nova Scotia.
The proposed tidal array will consist of two innovative platforms developed by Sustainable Marine. The first one, called PLAT-I, has been installed for testing on the waters of Grand Passage almost two years ago, while a second one is currently being assembled in Meteghan, Nova Scotia. The second platform is set to undergo tests in Grand Passage later this year and will be relocated to the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) in 2021.
The tidal array is expected to offset 17,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, once completed.
