CalWave puts into operation pilot submerged wave energy converter

California-based CalWave Power Technologies Inc on Tuesday said its pilot submerged wave energy converter has been in operation since September 16 off the San Diego coast.

CalWave x1 uses CalWave's xWave technology and is designed to provide high performance while still controlling structural loads even in strong storms. The pilot device will be tested for six months to determine its performance and reliability in open ocean.

In 2019, CalWave won a grant from the US Department of Energy to support the pilot project.

After the demonstration, the company will prepare to deploy a larger device at the 20-MW PacWave test site.
