C2e to break ground on USD-100m biogas plant in N Carolina

US renewables developer Carbon Cycle Energy LLC (C2e) will break ground today on a USD-100-million (EUR 96m) biogas plant near Warsaw in North Carolina’s Duplin County.

The company says that this will be the largest utility-scale biogas facility in the country. The plant, to be known as C2e Renewables NC, is expected to process over 750,000 tonnes of manure, as well as agricultural and industrial food processing waste per year.

Once completed in late 2017, the new plant will be producing enough fuel a year to generate some 290,000 MWh of electricity. At full capacity, it will generate 6,500 dekatherms of biomethane per day, equivalent to roughly 50,000 gallons of diesel fuel. C2e has already inked deals to supply 100% of the facility’s output of biomethane to Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) and a second, unnamed Fortune 500 company.

C2e Renewables NC is the first in a pipeline of large anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas treatment facilities planned by the Colorado-based company, it said.
