Dec 23, 2013 - US wind industry supplier Broadwind Energy Inc (NASDAQ:BWEN) said today it had received an order for over 200 wind turbine towers from German engineering company Siemens (ETR:SIE).
The towers will be installed at wind farms owned by US utility MidAmerican Energy Co (PINK:MDPWK).
Last week Siemens confirmed that it had received a contract to supply 448 wind turbines with a total capacity of 1,050 MW to MidAmerican for projects in the state of Iowa. On December 17, The Journal Sentinel in Wisconsin cited Siemens spokeswoman Claire Little as saying that Broadwind would be the tower supplier for the huge contract. “[..] the majority of orders for the MidAmerican Energy wind project are now in our backlog and we have clear visibility into the second half of 2015,” Peter C Duprey, president and chief executive of Broadwind, said today without revealing financial details on the tower deal.
Broadwind will manufacture the towers for Siemens at its plants in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Abilene, Texas. So far in 2012 the company has won tower orders for USD 389 million (EUR 284m).
MidAmerican Energy Co is a unit of MidAmerican Energy Holdings, which is in turn controlled by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A).
