German renewable energy company BayWa r.e. AG has sealed a virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 42-MW wind project in the Scottish Highlands with British Telecom Group (BT).
The contract, touted as one of the first of its kind in the UK, will see BT buy electricity and related Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) from the German firm’s Dalquhandy wind park in South Lanarkshire. The fixed-price deal will be in force for 10 years and is tied to 80% of the plant’s generation, BayWa said on Monday.
The contracted power volume is estimated at roughly 90 GWh per year.
The Dalquhandy wind farm will be located at the former open cast coal mine near Coalburn, consisting of 10 Vestas V136 turbines. Slated to begin commercial operations in the last quarter of 2022, it is expected to produce enough electricity to cover the consumption of 34,000 homes.
The VPPA supports BT’s commitment to have a net zero carbon emissions business by 2045. The UK’s biggest telecommunications and network provider is already using 100% renewable power across its global operations. Back in 2014, the telecoms group inked a PPA for BayWa’s 30-MW Stroupster wind farm in the Scottish Highlands.
