August 2 (Renewables Now) - Northern Ireland-based specialist plastic products provider Brett Martin on Wednesday said it is sourcing power from a 6.42-MWp solar system that has been funded and developed by Lightsource BP.

The installation, situated at Gibson Farm in Mallusk, Newtownabbey and now operated by Lightsource BP, is hard-wired directly into Brett Martin's facility located nearby.

In combination with Brett Martin's onsite wind turbine, renewable sources now provide 25% of the company's energy demand, according to the announcement.

"Our core activity of processing plastics is very energy intensive and with energy costs in Northern Ireland at around 25% more than the European average initiatives like this are critical to help us maintain our competitive edge in a global marketplace where over 50% of our sales are exported," explained Brett Martin managing director Laurence Martin.
