US biofuel production equipment provider Blume Distillation LLC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of a biorefinery in Zambia.
The agreement is with Zambia's Thomro Investments Ltd, whose founder and chief executive, Thomson Sinkala, has conceived the project to be located in Chipili District in Luapula, Blume said recently.
The facility will use Blume's proprietary Biorefinery Liquid Replacement Fuel (LRF) equipment to convert crops and associated production waste into fuel and agricultural co-products.
The project will help provide increased benefits from Thomro Cassava plantation interests, according to the announcement. Ultimately, the site will be able to produce more than 9.46 million liters (2.5 million gallons) per year of renewable fuel products for applications such as clean indoor cooking, refrigeration, powering agricultural and water pumps and producing micro grid electrical generation. The phase one implementation will include a 1-MW electrical co-generation plant to demonstrate the operation model.
Thomro is also interested in addressing the transport fuel market and is in talks with the Industrial Development Corp to partner on the project.
