BlueFloat unveils 1-GW floating wind project for Taiwan debut

Spain-based offshore wind developer BlueFloat Energy announced on Tuesday that it has arrived in the Taiwanese market with plans to install a floating wind farm with over 1 GW of capacity.

The maiden project, named Winds of September, would be located 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) off the coast of Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City in northwestern Taiwan. It is named after strong winds hitting the Hsinchu region every September, the developer said.

BlueFloat plans to install the floating turbines in an area of around 125 square kilometres (48.3 sq miles) at around 70-80 metres water depth.

BlueFloat Energy appointed Michael Pinkerton as its Taiwan country manager. Pinkerton’s background includes management of renewable energy projects at Australia’s Macquarie Group Ltd (ASX:MQG) and Taiwan’s offshore wind player Swancor Renewable Energy.
