Madrid-based BlueFloat Energy LLC and Aussie partner Energy Estate Pty Ltd announced on Friday that they have expanded the size of their floating wind project off the Hunter-Central Coast region of New South Wales to 1.65 GW from 1.4 GW.
The duo said in a statement that the increase in the capacity reflects the results of a detailed analysis of the area being considered and its floating wind deployment potential. It also takes into account the potential size of the Commonwealth offshore wind zone.
“Since we started the development of the Hunter Coast Offshore Wind Project in 2020 the need for new, large-scale generation capacity in the Hunter-Central Coast region has accelerated - with the retirement date for the existing coal-fired power stations moving forward by decades,” commented Carlos Martin, CEO of BlueFloat Energy.
The partners also released a visual simulation of the project, allowing coastal communities to see what the wind park’s 110 turbines would look like from 10 iconic points during the day and at night.
A month ago, BlueFloat and Energy Estate said they were expanding their Greater Gippsland bottom-fixed wind project off the coast of Victoria, as well. The capacity of that scheme was increased even more significantly -- to 2.1 GW from 1.3 GW.
